Carl Frederick Maedl

January 14, 1909 - July 13, 2011

Biography

Carl Frederick Maedl, age 102, peacefully passed away on July 13, 2011, at the Health Care Center at Butterfield Trail Village in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Carl was born January 14, 1909, in Harding County, SD, the fourth of seven children of Gottlieb and Alvina (Schmaltz) Maedl. He was raised on a farm near Frazee, Minnesota and graduated from Moorhead State Teachers College in 1934. Always wanting to see the world, in1938, he & wife Alfhild (Petie) left for the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal Zone, where they raised a family and spent the next 32 years of their lives. Carl was a biology teacher (Cristobal, CZ), school counselor, vice principal, and later principal of the Cristobal Junior-Senior High School in Coco Solo, CZ. During this time, he also earned his master's degree from Columbia University, NYC.

Carl and Petie retired first to Springdale, AR, in 1970, and then to Butterfield Trail Village in Fayetteville in 1986. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fayetteville, Northwest Arkansas Retired Federal Employees, and was active in the thrift shop for Northwest Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary in Springdale for 34 years.

Carl is survived by his two daughters, Pat (husband Jim) Krough of Deephaven, MN and Pam (husband Vince) Gutowski, of Charleston, IL; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Vivian Niesz; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Rick Maedl.

A reception for friends and acquaintances will be held Monday, July 18th, 1:30-3:30 pm, in the Day Room at Butterfield Trail Village. Private burial will be held at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville.
